Prof. Yasufuku is a globally recognized leader in thoracic surgery and a pioneering innovator in the field of lung cancer diagnostics. He is best known as the co-inventor of the endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) procedure, an advancement that has fundamentally transformed the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer around the world.
He currently serves as Head of the Division of Thoracic Surgery and William Coco Chair in Surgical Innovation for Lung Cancer at the University Health Network (UHN). In addition, he holds leadership roles in numerous international societies for thoracic surgery and interventional pulmonology. His achievements have been recognized with prestigious honours, including the Japanese Medical Research and Development Grand Prize Award and the Sakura Award.
